Man Utd transfers: Gerard Piqué urges Barça’s Thiago Alcantara to stay

Man Utd transfers: Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué urges Thiago Alcantara to stay at the Catalan side

Gerard Piqué has called on Barcelona to convince Thiago Alcantara to stay at the club amid reported interest from Manchester United.

The 22-year-old put himself firmly in the shop window following a stunning hat-trick in Spain’s 4-2 victory over Italy in the European Under-21 championship final on Tuesday.
Alcantara, capped three times by Spain’s senior side, has hinted at the possibility of leaving the newly-crowned La Liga champions earlier this month, with Red Devils linked with a £20m swoop.
But Piqué, who spent three seasons at United, wants Alcantara to stay at Camp Nou beyond the summer, tipping the midfielder to have a big
future.
“There is a possibility that he could leave but we have to convince him that the best place for him is Barcelona,” Piqué told radio station Onda Cero.
“Players in his position like Xavi were patient and they ended up defining an era.
“When you watch [Spain U21s] and see how superior they have been in this tournament you realise that the future is very positive.”
Alcantara has scored 11 goals in 101 appearances for Barcelona since making his first-team debut in 2009.
