€18m Manchester United target urged to stay with Barcelona

Manchester United transfer news: Thiago Alcantara urged to stay at Barcelona by Gerard Pique

Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara has been urged by club-mate an compatriot Gerard Pique to reject a proposed summer transfer window move to Manchester United and forge a career at the Camp Nou.
Thiago has been touted as a potential acquisition for the Premier League champions before the transfer deadline in September, with Manchester United reportedly ready to activate his €18 million release clause.
The latest reports claim the 22-year-old has requested to leave Barcelona for Manchester United, as David Moyes looks to secure the acquisition of a creative midfield influence following the retirement of Old Trafford legend Paul Scholes.
Pique, though, believes the best course of action for Thiago would be to stay with Barcelona, and the former Manchester United defender has used the example of Xavi as inspiration for the Spain under-21 international.
"There is a possibility that he could leave but we have to convince him that the best place for him is Barcelona," Pique told reporters.
"Players in his position like Xavi were patient and they ended up defining an era."
Thiago once again highlighted his credentials as a superstar of the future on Tuesday evening as he scored a hat-trick in Spain's triumph over Italy in the final of the under-21 European Championships.
The playmaker scored his treble in the first 45 minutes as Spain won 2-1 to record a second successive triumph in the competition.
