Usmanov backs Arsenal move for Rooney

Arsenal's second biggest shareholder, Alisher Usmanov, has publically backed the Gunners to make a move for unsettled Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, reports the Mirror.

Usmanov is owner of a 29.9% stake in the London club, has a significant say in the direction of the Gunners transfer policy, although must play second fiddle to club owner Stan Kroenke.

But with reports in recent weeks linking Arsenal with a £30m move for the England forward, the Russian has publically given his backing to such a move, and encouraged Rooney to make the move:

"[Rooney] is a great player and [joining Arsenal] would be great for Rooney, and Arsenal too," Usmanov said.

Rooney found himself out of favour at times last season, famously being benched for the Champions League clash with Real Madrid at Old Trafford, and then boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that the player had asked for a transfer away from the club.

The ex-Everton man netted just 12 league goals last season in 27 appearances, and was played in a more withdrawn role following the signing of Robin van Persie.
